English Language Learners have unique challenges, and not all come to the classroom with the same issues. Whether their native language has rules that conflict with those of English, or they are frustrated by the ambiguities of English, they require varied and systematic experiences in a safe learning environment to make a comfortable transition to English. Bob McMurray will describe the principles of Varied Practice, why they are applicable for teaching reading to ELL students, and show examples of using Varied Practice to teach reading. Marsha Allen will describe how the Santa Fe New Mexico schools have applied varied practice how it has worked so effectively, and how can you apply that knowledge to your district.
