Language program may have kept Sacramento school open

Laura Valencia's kindergarten class is one of three at Edison Elementary School in Sacramento that teaches students almost entirely in Spanish. The program – called dual immersion – teaches both native Spanish-speaking students and English-speaking students.

It probably saved Edison Elementary.

The elementary school, ensconced in a lower-income neighborhood near Watt Avenue and Arden Way, was targeted for closure last year because of declining enrollment. The school had 325 students.

After adding three dual-immersion classes this year, enrollment climbed to 400, said Todd Lindeman, principal.
